Horse gram is mainly for those who want to reduce weight. It produces heat in the body and melts the fat. So pregnant women are not advised to consume this food. It is said to possess anti-hyperglycemic properties and hence it is good for diabetic patients. Also it is rich in vitamins and iron.

I learnt this Kollu thogayal recipe from my MIL. Since then, this dish has become a mandatory one on every Saturday.

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  1. Black pepper – 1 teaspoon
  2. Cumin – 1 teaspoon
  3. Coriander seeds – 1 tablespoon
  4. Dry red chilli – 1 ( long )
  5. Oil – 1 tablespoon
  6. Garlic – 3 to 4 (big cloves, chopped)
  7. Onion – 1/4 cup (chopped)
  8. Tamarind – a small piece (size of a blueberry)
  9. Horse gram – 1 cup (pressure cooked)
  10. Fresh or frozen coconut – 2 heaping tablespoons (shredded)
  11. Salt – as required
  12. Water – 1/4 cup

Method:

  1. First, wash and soak the horse gram in water overnight or at least 4 hours and then pressure cook it for 2 whistles.

Now, heat oil in a pan, add black pepper, cumin, coriander seeds, red chilli and saute for two minutes.

2. Then add the garlic, tamarind, onions and saute until onions become translucent. Now add the cooked horse gram and saute for few more minutes.

3. Now add the fresh or the frozen coconut and saute for 3 more minutes. Then switch off the heat and allow the contents to cool.

4. Finally add salt as per your taste along with little water and grind it to a smooth paste (the consistency should be slightly thicker than a chutney).

Serve it with hot rice or dosas!
